Mannequins.

Sometimes they’re so realistic they’re spooky. And once in a while, the store mannequins aren’t mannequins at all but real people posing as such. They suck you in with their piercing gaze and their lovely ensemble. You’re examining that exquisite lacey shawl when, boom, they move or speak, scaring the daylights out of you.

Typically, people don’t have mannequins in their homes.

I do.

Mine, Lola, was given to me by my former sister-in-law.

I love Lola, but my granddaughter doesn’t. When she first encountered Lola, she shrieked, ran, and demanded that I get Lola OUT OF MY SIGHT!

I did.

Lola is very comfy, holding court in an upstairs bedroom no one sleeps in.

I decked her out in my mother’s bridesmaid dress from 1950. Tossed on one of my maternal grandmother’s hats and wrapped her in a boa that I’ve worn when doing dance performances.

She looks splendid, with her fierce attitude.

If you’re in the mood for some fun and whimsy, you can purchase mannequins at Amazon and dress them however you want.

Beware of granddaughters who frighten easily.
